Why Is Safety Belt Use So Important?
Vehicles are specifically designed to provide a "safety cage" to protect occupants. So in the event of a crash, you want to make sure you remain in your seat, inside the vehicle - and the best way to do that is to wear your safety belt. Wearing a lap/shoulder belt keeps you in the proper position to allow air bags to work effectively, providing even more protection for your head and body. Belts keep you from sliding down in the seat where you could be injured more severely, being thrown about in the vehicle in the case of a crash, or worse, being ejected from the vehicle where your chances of being seriously or even fatally injured are almost certain.
In 2003, 74 percent of passengers who were ejected from a vehicle were killed.
