Belt Use Laws

Safety belts are so important, 49 states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws requiring their use. Twenty-one states permit primary enforcement of their belt laws, allowing officers to write a ticket whenever they observe a belt law violation. Twenty-eight states have so-called "secondary" laws, meaning that police officers can ticket for not wearing a belt only after the vehicle has been stopped for some other violation.

Regardless of the type of law, most states are enforcing them and working hard to increase belt use. In the last NHTSA national belt use survey, 81% of passenger car occupants wore belts, compared to 83% in SUVs and vans, and 69% in pickup trucks.
