Tips for Proper Safety Belt Use

  • Most newer vehicles have adjustable anchors for the shoulder belt that can be raised or lowered so that the belt fits across you more comfortably. So make sure you adjust them to the position that's most comfortable for you. However, if the belt rubs against your neck, move your body a little more toward the center of the vehicle.
  • Some belts have a "window shade" feature that allows you to put a little slack in the belt. Even though that may make the belt more comfortable, keeping slack to a minimum will keep you safer in a crash.
  • Never put the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. Belts are designed to go over your shoulder and hips - places that are strong enough to withstand the forces in a crash. Putting the belt under the arm places it across the ribs, which are more easily injured. And putting it behind your back makes it more likely that your head will hit the dashboard or the windshield.
